Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has opened up about her decision to avoid interfering in her son’s marriage, despite her concerns as a mother and grandmother. During a recent appearance on the *Dear Ife* podcast, she shared her perspective on maintaining a respectful distance in her son’s marital life.
Omoni, a mother of three sons, emphasized the importance of empathy in her approach. She reflected on her own experience, noting that she married at 21, the same age as her daughter-in-law. She acknowledged being strongheaded at that age and recognized that her daughter-in-law might feel similarly. “If I was strongheaded at 21 and would not have liked being told what to do, it only makes sense that my daughter-in-law would also not like to be controlled,” she explained.
The actress also underscored the need for sons to communicate openly about their wives’ feelings. She recalled instances where her son approached her to discuss his wife’s preferences, and she had to remind herself to be mindful of how her comments could be perceived. “If your child cannot come to you to say ‘my wife doesn’t like this,’ that’s a problem in itself,” she stated.
Omoni further asserted that it’s crucial to recognize that once a child marries, they form their own family. “People need to understand and realize that this is now another family. Yes, they are still a part of your family, but they now have their own family,” she concluded.
