A chaotic scene unfolded on Monday in Isiokpo, the Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters, as police used teargas and gunfire to disperse local government workers attempting to resume work. Following a directive from the National Union of Local Government Employees, workers returned to the secretariat, which had been closed since recent attacks by suspected political thugs after local government elections.
Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of workers, including two women, sustained injuries while fleeing the scene. Many reportedly escaped into nearby bushes for safety. According to an anonymous source, “Over 100 policemen arrived heavily armed, firing teargas and gunshots. People scattered in panic; two women collapsed, and police initially blocked access to medical care.”
Richard Henry, Chief of Staff of Ikwerre LGA, confirmed the incident and mentioned the presence of a water tank vehicle and multiple police vans. He condemned the police’s actions, stating, “This situation was unnecessary. The arson case is under investigation by the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry. We’ll resist these actions.”
In response, Rivers State police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko justified the police presence, explaining it was a preventive measure against further damage to the council secretariat, which had been severely affected by prior attacks. She noted that over 300 people breached the gate, prompting police intervention to avert potential property damage.
