Nollywood actor and social media personality Enioluwa Adeoluwa recently addressed a common critique about the Nigerian film industry: the frequent use of the same actors in movies. Responding to a comment from an X user who expressed frustration about seeing the “same faces” in Nollywood films, Enioluwa explained that financial constraints play a significant role.
In a post on X, Enioluwa pointed out that unlike Hollywood, actors in Nigeria cannot afford to work on just one film a year due to the industry’s lower pay scale. He emphasized that the Nigerian film industry is still evolving and cannot support a large influx of newcomers at the moment. He explained, “Many newcomers wouldn’t be able to meet even their basic needs, and no one wants to be famous and financially unstable.”
Enioluwa’s response came after a heated exchange on X between actress Jemima Osunde and a user who criticized the industry for its lack of diversity in casting. In the thread, Enioluwa further acknowledged that Nollywood is still growing and that streaming platforms and box office successes are slowly improving the situation. However, he noted that the financial disparity between Hollywood and Nollywood is vast, citing the example of “Avengers,” which grossed over $2 billion and can afford to pay actors millions of dollars.
He concluded by suggesting that while the situation is improving, the industry cannot yet support the volume of newcomers that some might expect, as the buying power and profitability are still developing.
