The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to face internal strife, with a public clash erupting between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, spokesman of the opposition coalition in the House of Representatives. Both figures blamed different leaders for the ongoing crisis.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, accused former vice president Atiku Abubakar of contributing to the party’s woes by allegedly supporting President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Meanwhile, Ugochinyere pointed fingers at the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, citing leadership struggles as the root of the PDP’s issues.
Speaking at an event organized by the PDP stakeholders group, “Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria,” Ugochinyere, who represents the Ideato federal constituency of Imo State, criticized the NWC for its inability to restore order. He highlighted the absence of a decisive leadership structure, calling for reforms to address internal discord.
“The way the NWC is operating now is embarrassing. Before we can fix Nigeria, we need to fix PDP first,” Ugochinyere said, emphasizing the importance of resolving the party’s leadership struggles to regain the public’s trust.
Abdullahi, however, defended the NWC, explaining that they inherited the current issues and are working to navigate the challenges. He dismissed claims that the committee is influenced by outside forces, noting that Atiku’s influence led to the PDP’s current situation.
The tensions within the PDP are seen as hindering its role as a strong opposition force, with both leaders calling for urgent resolutions to stabilize the party’s future.
