Uruguayan Footballer Juan Izquierdo Dies After On-Pitch Collapse
Juan Izquierdo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan footballer, passed away on August 22 following a sudden heart arrest during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo. Izquierdo’s tragic collapse occurred in the 84th minute of the game. Immediate medical intervention was carried out as he was swiftly transported to Hospital Albert Einstein. Despite being placed on a ventilator and receiving urgent care, he succumbed to his condition, which was identified as “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”
The news of Izquierdo’s death has profoundly impacted the football community. His club, Nacional, issued a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to his family, friends, and supporters. They stated, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss.”
Alejandro Domínguez, the president of CONMEBOL, also offered condolences, highlighting the widespread mourning within South American football. São Paulo, the opposing team, expressed their grief by describing it as a “sad day for football” and honored Izquierdo by wearing commemorative shirts during the match.
Izquierdo had an impressive career in Uruguayan football, having played for several notable clubs including Liverpool, Cerro, Peñarol, and Montevideo Wanderers. His contributions were instrumental in Liverpool’s league title win in 2023. At the time of his passing, Izquierdo was with Nacional, where he was striving for a starting position.
In response to this tragic incident, Uruguayan football leagues have postponed matches, reflecting the widespread shock and mourning within the sport. The loss of Juan Izquierdo is a significant blow to the football community, marking a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the deep connections within the world of sports.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially designated Morocco as the host for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League finals. The tournament will take place from November 9 to November 23, as announced on CAF’s official website.
