The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet their demands or face a nationwide strike starting on October 25, 2024. This decision follows an emergency meeting held on October 2, where health sector leaders expressed frustration over unresolved issues.
Key grievances include the long-delayed implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustment, which has been pending since 2014. The unions also demand payment of salary arrears, restoration of funding to regulatory agencies, reconstitution of boards for federal health institutions, and a tax waiver on healthcare workers’ allowances. They are also calling for payment of COVID-19 hazard allowances.
Despite previous promises from President Bola Tinubu to address these issues, the unions noted that little progress has been made. They have now mobilized members across health facilities nationwide, preparing for industrial action if the government fails to act within the given timeframe.
The ultimatum was detailed in a communique signed by JOHESU leaders, warning of the potential strike and urging the government to act swiftly to prevent a nationwide disruption of healthcare services.
