Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo has been honored with the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his performance in the historical thriller “Jagun Jagun” at the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held on Saturday in Lagos. The film, which garnered seven nominations, also won awards for Achievement in Visual Effects and Makeup.
The ceremony featured notable winners, including Elsie Abang, who received the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for “KIPKEMBOI,” and Michell Lemuya, named Best Young Promising Actor for “NAWI.” Zolisa Xaluva won Best Actor in a Leading Role for “The Queenstown King,” while Jackie Appiah secured Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Red Carpet.”
Harry Bentil’s “Letters to Goddo” was awarded Best Feature Film, with Jahmil X.T Qubeka recognized as Best Director for “The Queenstown Kings.” The AMAA Best Film award went to “The Weekend,” which also secured accolades for Achievement in Screenplay, Cinematography, and Best Nigerian Film from the National Film and Video Censors Board.
Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Souleymane Cissé from Mali, Nacer Khemir from Tunisia, and Haile Gerima from Ethiopia. Special recognition awards went to Alain Gomis from Senegal and Gabon, as well as Tsitsi Dangarembga from Zimbabwe.
Dr. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, Chief Executive Officer of AMAA, expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the ceremony’s success, acknowledging the support from Lagos, Bayelsa states, and international attendees from the U.S. He emphasized that AMAA celebrates not only the winners but also the excellence and richness of African history.
As AMAA enters its second decade, Anyiam-Osigwe remarked, “a new chapter in the history book opens,” reaffirming the event’s commitment to showcasing African storytelling on a global platform.
