The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Lugbe, Abuja, has undertaken a significant community service project by renovating a block of four classrooms at Government Secondary School, Lugbe. This initiative is part of the church’s annual All Africa Service Project, aimed at making a positive impact in local communities.
In addition to the classroom renovation, the church engaged in various community services across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including weeding walkway lawns and clearing debris from gutters in areas such as Wuse Zone 5 and Mpape.
Bility Okpamen, Bishop of the Second Lugbe Ward of the Church, explained to Daily Sun that the All Africa Service Project is an annual event held every August. The project involves careful planning and decision-making by church officials to select impactful interventions for different communities.
In 2023, the church contributed office equipment, including a computer and printer, to the Divisional Police Station in Lugbe, and also supported the installation of an overhead water tank to provide clean water. This year, the focus shifted to the educational sector. The church undertook a comprehensive renovation of the classroom block at Government Secondary School, Lugbe, including repainting, replacing roofing sheets, and performing various maintenance tasks to improve the learning environment.
A notable aspect of this year’s project was the inclusion of local Muslim leaders in the handover ceremony, reflecting the church’s commitment to fostering interfaith relations and community unity.
The All Africa Service Project aims to build stronger community ties through acts of selfless service. Past projects have included cleaning markets, renovating schools, and donating essential items. This year’s focus on education was driven by the need to enhance the study conditions for students at the school.
With 30 wards organized into three stakes in Abuja, the church is committed to following the teachings of Jesus Christ by serving and making a difference in the community. Members of the church eagerly anticipate the annual service, which they believe brings spiritual rewards and blessings.
President Alaribe Obinna, Stake President of the Abuja Nigeria Lugbe Stake, expressed gratitude for the support from church members, emphasizing that the services provided are entirely free and designed to benefit the community. He also highlighted the church’s efforts in human capital development to empower young adults with skills for financial independence.
A representative from Government Secondary School, who requested anonymity, thanked the church for their substantial contribution and assured that the facilities would be well-maintained and utilized to benefit the students’ education.
