The National Peace Committee (NPC) has highlighted the turbulent nature of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, marking it as a period of significant contention and dispute. The NPC commended the introduction of the Electoral Act 2022, which provided a stronger legal framework for the elections, but noted that the overall atmosphere was highly charged and fraught with challenges.
The NPC observed a notable increase in political engagement among Nigerian youths, driven by a surge in social media and technology use. The emergence of a third political force, led by Peter Obi’s shift to the Labour Party, marked a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, resulting in a fiercely competitive campaign involving the three major parties: APC, PDP, and LP.
The committee reported several violent incidents during the election period, including clashes between political supporters and attacks on opposition figures. Specific examples include a deadly confrontation between APC and PDP supporters in Zamfara state, assaults on LP supporters in Lagos, and various attacks across the Southeast and Northwest regions. These incidents, along with increased violence from groups like IPOB and banditry in the North, underscored the need for effective conflict management.
In response to these challenges, the NPC developed a strategic intervention program aimed at promoting peaceful elections and transitions. Abubakar, speaking on behalf of the NPC, emphasized the need for stronger enforcement of electoral laws and the prosecution of offenders. He also acknowledged the global rise in political violence and indicated that the NPC is revising its strategies in collaboration with the INEC to ensure future elections are conducted peacefully.
The NPC’s Head of Secretariat, Revd Fr Atta Barkindo, pointed out several factors affecting election credibility, including non-compliance with guidelines, trust deficits, limited political awareness, technological issues, and socio-economic challenges. The NPC recommended a comprehensive approach involving government action on socio-economic conditions and strict adherence to INEC guidelines.
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu confirmed that the NPC is prepared to support the upcoming Edo and Ondo States governorship elections, reflecting a commitment to improving the electoral process.
The NPC report presentation was attended by notable figures including General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Most Revd Matthew Hassan Kukah, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Lt. Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, and Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.
