The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has announced a transnational education partnership between the UK and Nigeria aimed at improving higher education standards and addressing the employability of graduates.
Speaking at the Going Global Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Montgomery emphasized the partnership’s goal of fostering collaboration between UK and Nigerian universities to establish common standards and share expertise.
“This partnership will allow UK universities to work more effectively with Nigerian institutions, improving quality and meeting the economic needs of African nations,” Montgomery stated. He highlighted that 11 UK Vice Chancellors are in Nigeria to engage with their counterparts in Abuja and Lagos on advancing education systems.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Tunji Alaussa, also addressed the conference, emphasizing the importance of aligning Nigeria’s education system with the demands of the 21st century.
“We are producing many graduates who are not employable. This administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda is committed to reforming the education sector to provide opportunities for our youth,” Alaussa explained.
With Nigeria’s youthful population—70% under 30 years old—both countries aim to leverage this collaboration to tackle challenges in education and create a workforce ready for global opportunities.
