Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has fulfilled his campaign promise to address perceived injustices by swearing in three judges excluded by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. The judges—Justices Ojo Osa, Okundamiya Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—were recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023 but were not sworn in during Obaseki’s tenure.
At the swearing-in ceremony held at the Festival Hall, Okpebholo emphasized his commitment to fairness and the independence of the judiciary. He stated, “No one should be discriminated against, marginalised, or hated for personal reasons or due to a lack of godfatherism.”
The governor reaffirmed the judiciary’s critical role under the doctrine of separation of powers and encouraged the new judges to uphold fairness, ensure justice, and protect citizens’ rights.
Justice Ojo, speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in judges, expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve, acknowledging his swift action just weeks into office.
This decision underscores Okpebholo’s promise to strengthen the judiciary and ensure inclusivity in governance.
