The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle, widely known as Sego, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday, April 5, 2025, when six armed men attacked his residence in the Surulere area of Lagos.
Fortunately, Sego was not home during the late-night assault, which occurred around 11 p.m. on Gbadamosi Close. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen tied up the security guard stationed at the entrance before breaking into the house and ransacking it in a failed bid to locate the union leader.
Sources disclosed that Sego had earlier left for a social event with some associates who had visited him earlier that day. The timing of his absence may have saved his life.
The violent intrusion sent shockwaves across the neighborhood, with residents expressing fear over the audacity of the attack and the possibility of the assailants returning.
Operatives from the Area C Police Command have visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage and question the security guard, who is said to have provided crucial leads for the investigation.
A close associate of Sego confirmed that the union chairman is deeply unsettled by the attack, particularly as it comes at a time when he is championing reforms within the transport union to enhance member welfare and discipline.
The associate added that Sego is cooperating fully with security agencies to ensure the assailants are swiftly identified and prosecuted.
As of press time, police investigations are ongoing, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
