Moghalu Proposes Three Key Approaches to Combat Corruption in Nigeria

-

Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), outlined three essential strategies to eliminate corruption in Nigeria. In a Facebook post, Moghalu emphasized the need for a national value system, accountability, and improved public service pay.

He suggested introducing Ethics as a compulsory subject in schools and promoting anti-corruption values in the media, with leaders setting the example through zero tolerance for corruption. He also highlighted the importance of accountability, advocating for strict penalties like those seen in countries such as China.

Lastly, Moghalu pointed out that corruption tends to decrease in countries with higher public service wages, provided that strong value systems and accountability measures are in place. Reflecting on his experience with a Nigerian UN peacekeeper in Cambodia, he noted that better salaries could reduce corruption, though higher pay alone isn’t enough without the first two approaches.

Moghalu stressed that while corruption is a global issue linked to human nature, strong laws, accountability, and governance can help curb it for societal progress.
