Lagos Assembly Impeachment of Obasa: A Self-Inflicted Own Goal, Says Analyst

-

Political analyst Jide Ojo has described the impeachment of Mudahiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as a “self-inflicted own goal.” Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ojo suggested that Obasa’s disrespectful remarks towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu may have played a key role in his downfall.

Obasa was impeached by the Lagos State House of Assembly on accusations of statutory and financial infractions. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, has taken over as the new Speaker, while Mojeed Fatai was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

Ojo pointed out that Obasa’s snide remark during a budget presentation, where he suggested that he was more qualified than certain state leaders, may have been perceived as disrespectful to the governor. He also referenced the allegations of Obasa’s behind-the-scenes politics, such as keeping the governor and party elders waiting without apology, which he believes contributed to his impeachment.

Ojo labeled Obasa’s actions as a “self-inflicted own goal,” highlighting the political miscalculations that led to his removal.
