The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims circulating online about a supposed alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming governorship election.
Sam Uruopa, the party’s Publicity Secretary, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and part of a smear campaign against their gubernatorial candidate, Olu Akpata.
In a statement, Uruopa addressed a publication by Vincent Osaghae dated August 20, 2024, which suggested a secret collaboration between Akpata and the APC. He vehemently denied these claims, asserting that there is no truth to the assertion and that Akpata’s campaign is independently funded by dedicated party members and supporters.
Uruopa criticized the attempt to link Akpata with the APC or the presidency, describing it as an effort to undermine Akpata’s candidacy and distract from his campaign. He emphasized that Akpata remains committed to Labour Party ideals and has not engaged in any clandestine meetings or received funding from the APC or presidency.
The party also clarified that their campaign finances are transparent and that their primaries were conducted fairly without external interference. They urged supporters and the public to ignore the misleading allegations and focus on the real issues at hand.
