Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has provided details on how the mastermind behind the abduction of 20 medical students was taken down.
According to reports by the Daily Sun, Egbetokun welcomed the freed students in Abuja after their successful rescue by the police.
During a ceremony where the IGP handed over the students to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja on Sunday, he disclosed that additional suspects involved in the kidnapping are currently in police custody.
Egbetokun revealed that on August 22, police successfully rescued five other passengers and two additional victims who had been held captive by the kidnappers. He emphasized that all 27 rescued individuals were freed without any ransom being paid.
“I am pleased to inform you that the leader of this notorious gang was neutralized during a shootout with our operatives,” Egbetokun stated.
He further mentioned that two other gang members were apprehended, and their weapons were seized. “These individuals are now in our custody, where they are providing critical information that will aid in dismantling their criminal network and preventing future abductions,” Egbetokun added.
