Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana has urged for a thorough investigation into alleged fuel importation fraud, highlighting concerns over Nigeria’s ongoing energy crisis.
In a recent interview with Channels TV, Falana criticized the inconsistent messages from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) regarding fuel supply and pricing. He expressed frustration over the NNPCL’s assurances of a steady petrol supply while simultaneously facing affordability and sustainability challenges.
Falana questioned the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, noting that recent statements from Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, suggested that the country could no longer sustain the current fuel price due to increased smuggling and pipeline issues. He argued that the government has failed to address the root causes of these problems effectively.
Falana also raised concerns about past government contracts aimed at combating fuel theft and smuggling, alleging that funds for these projects were misappropriated. He criticized the government for not delivering on promises to improve refinery operations and questioned the efficacy of new contracts for tracking fuel exports.
He called for a public inquiry into the importation of fuel, urging Nigerians, the media, and civil society organizations to demand transparency and accountability from the government and the NNPCL. Falana emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the cost of governance and the implementation of the Oronsaye report to address inefficiencies and corruption within public offices.
Regarding constitutional reforms, Falana suggested that meaningful change requires a revolutionary approach, arguing that incremental amendments are insufficient to address the deep-seated issues facing Nigeria. He also commented on recent controversies involving the National Assembly, advocating for a broader review of public office benefits and the need for systemic change.
Falana concluded by addressing recent legal challenges faced by labor movements, asserting that any allegations of treasonable offenses against labor leaders should be carefully scrutinized to ensure justice and fairness.
