Barr. Iyabo Fakunle-Okieimen, a lawmaker representing Ilejemeje Constituency in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, has expressed concern over the underrepresentation of women in Nigerian politics. Speaking at a programme organized in collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and UN Women, she emphasized the need for greater female political involvement.
Fakunle-Okieimen thanked key figures such as Governor Biodun Oyebanji and former Governor Kayode Fayemi for their support in advancing women’s political participation. Despite these efforts, she pointed out that only 48 women hold legislative positions across Nigeria, with Ekiti State accounting for six of them.
During her speech, Fakunle-Okieimen lauded NILDS and UN Women for their efforts to maintain and increase female political representation, urging her constituents to back women in politics. She also highlighted her active role in serving her constituency, particularly in healthcare and environmental initiatives.
Guest speaker Dr. Catherine Ikokor, representing NILDS Director-General, reiterated the importance of gender inclusivity in politics, citing higher female representation in countries like Rwanda and South Africa as models for Nigeria to follow.
