In a tragic midnight ambush, a divisional police officer (DPO) and several officers were killed by unknown gunmen during a rescue operation for kidnapped victims in Delta State.
The DPO, identified as CSP Jega, and his team were attacked near Agbarho Railway Station at around 1:00 a.m. on Monday. According to reports, the police had responded to distress calls about the kidnapping, but were unaware of the ambush awaiting them.
An insider revealed that the kidnappers opened fire as soon as they spotted the police team. CSP Jega was killed instantly, while the Orerokpo DPO was critically injured and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Several other officers were also reportedly killed, although the exact number of casualties is still unknown.
The incident was confirmed by Delta Human Rights Activist, Comrade Israel Joe, who expressed deep sorrow and condolences, recalling his recent interaction with the late DPO.
As of the time of filing this report, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, had yet to issue an official statement.
