Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has donated ₦50 million to support Shanahan University in Onitsha. The donation was made during an opening mass at the Basilica of the Holy Trinity Cathedral to mark the commencement of academic activities at the new institution.

Obi emphasized the critical role of education in societal development, highlighting that many universities worldwide were established by the church. He stressed the importance of knowledge over natural resources, urging students to prioritize their education.

In addition, Obi donated ₦10 million to St. Charles Borromeo School of Nursing, Waterside Onitsha, to enhance its infrastructure and learning environment.

The Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, praised Obi for his commitment to education. Okeke also announced free internet access for students at Shanahan University until January 2025, along with complimentary lunch for the day.

The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Obi Oguejiofor, lauded the university’s future potential, stating that it is set to become a leading institution. Shanahan University, which spans 18 hectares, is currently building a 1,500-seat auditorium and has welcomed over 200 students.
