Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, the wife of the Edo State governor, has initiated the sale of 500,000 prepaid electricity meters to residents across the state. This move aims to address the issue of estimated billing and make electricity more affordable for households and small businesses.
During the launch event in Benin City, Mrs. Obaseki highlighted the state government’s commitment to alleviating the challenges faced by residents. She also praised the collaboration between the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and other partners in making the initiative possible. She called for widespread awareness of the registration process to ensure residents can easily access the meters.
Hon. Enaholo Ojiefo, the State Commissioner for Mining, Energy, Oil, and Gas, emphasized that the project is part of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s broader plan to ensure 24-hour power supply across the state. He assured residents that once they apply and make payments through the designated portal, they would be connected within two weeks.
Ojiefo also mentioned the state’s plans to solar-power places of worship, hospitals, hotels, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with payment options available after four years. He credited the Ossiomo Power Plant and the state’s new electricity law for the progress in achieving stable power, which has significantly reduced the state’s dependency on diesel.
