In a significant political shift, over 1,500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), and Young Progressive Party (YPP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State.
Rep. Aminu Jaji, representing the Birnin Magaji/Kaura Namoda Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, welcomed the defectors during an event on Monday. He was represented by Alhaji Isiyaka Ajiya-Anka, the State Chairman of the APC Jajiyyaa Group.
According to Ajiya-Anka, the defectors included leaders and supporters from across various political parties in Zamfara. He hailed their decision as a “welcome development” for the ruling APC and assured them of fair treatment and a collaborative working relationship to strengthen the party’s presence in the state.
Prominent among the defectors were:
- Former state APGA Chairman, Alhaji Rabi’u Salisu-Bature, along with hundreds of APGA supporters.
- State YPP Chairman, Alhaji Sani Anka, and his supporters.
- PDP leaders from Shinkafi Local Government Area, including a former Director-General, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf, and elder Malam Ibrahim Tado.
- PDP Women Leader for Shinkafi LGA, Hajiya Abu Alasan, and Youth Leader, Lukman Hamidu.
Ajiya-Anka expressed confidence in the defectors’ capacity to bolster the APC’s strength, particularly within the Jajiyya movement.
This mass defection is viewed as a strategic gain for the APC in consolidating its influence in Zamfara State ahead of future elections.
