Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has hinted at a potential alliance between Atiku and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Ibe revealed that both leaders have learned valuable lessons from the 2023 elections and are exploring collaboration to avoid past mistakes.
During the 2023 presidential race, Atiku and Obi combined secured over 12 million votes but lost to APC’s Bola Tinubu, who garnered over eight million votes. Obi had left the PDP for the LP after failing to secure the PDP ticket, a split analysts believe weakened opposition efforts against the APC.
Ibe emphasized the need for a united front, stating, “Nigerians deserve better than what they are getting. It’s never been this bad in this country. Atiku has always promoted opposition unity as the only way to remove this incompetent and clueless government.”
While confirming ongoing discussions between the PDP and LP, Ibe refrained from revealing whether Atiku might step down for Obi in 2027. He asserted that all options are being considered to create a stronger opposition capable of delivering better governance.
The potential alliance between Atiku and Obi could significantly reshape the political landscape, offering Nigerians an alternative to the APC in the next election.
