Nigerian rapper Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno, has shared the inspiration behind his choice to rap in his native Igbo dialect.
Speaking on the latest episode of the In My Opinion podcast, Phyno revealed that while he started rapping in English, he later decided to switch to Igbo to offer something distinct to global audiences.
He explained, “I asked myself, ‘What can I sell to the world that they don’t already have?’ If I go to America or the UK, I can’t sell English to them—they own it. But Igbo? That’s unique, and that’s what I’m selling.”
Phyno also credited his upbringing and environment for shaping his artistic style, citing influences from highlife music and lyrical emcees like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Tupac.
Additionally, the rapper noted that embracing Igbo culture has extended beyond his music to his fashion, as he now wears traditional Igbo attire to promote and represent his heritage.
Phyno’s commitment to his roots underscores his dedication to showcasing the richness of Igbo culture on a global stage.
