Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Conserve Energy and Manage Resources

-

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to adopt energy-saving habits, including switching off lights to reduce electricity bills.

Speaking during his presidential media chat in Lagos, Tinubu emphasized the importance of resource management in the face of rising living costs.

“It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill—switch off the light. Let’s learn to manage,” Tinubu stated.

The president’s remarks come amid criticisms over his administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and hike electricity tariffs. In April 2024, the electricity regulator raised tariffs for Band A customers to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour, up from ₦66.

Tinubu defended his policies, asserting that he does not support price control measures but is committed to increasing market supply to address economic challenges. “I don’t believe in price control; we will work hard to supply the market,” he said.

Since the tariff hike and subsidy removal, Nigerians have faced increased financial pressure, sparking debates about the government’s approach to economic reforms. Tinubu’s latest appeal aims to encourage citizens to adopt cost-saving practices amid these changes.
