Andrés Iniesta, celebrated as one of football’s greatest midfielders, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.

The Spanish star is expected to formally reveal his decision on October 8, marking the end of a remarkable career that has lasted over two decades.

In a teaser video shared on his X account, Iniesta wrote, “Coming soon 8/10/24.”

Iniesta began his football journey at Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy, where his exceptional ball control, vision, and composure quickly set him apart. His talent was so apparent that former Barcelona captain Pep Guardiola once remarked to Xavi, “You’re going to retire me. This lad [Iniesta] is going to retire us all.”

Lauded for his technical prowess, Iniesta’s playing style was characterized by his directness and quick footwork, often described as if the ball was glued to his feet as he advanced into dangerous positions. His former manager, Vicente del Bosque, called him “a complete footballer,” noting his ability to both attack and defend, create opportunities, and score goals.

Iniesta’s trophy collection reflects his extraordinary impact on the game. During his 22 years at Barcelona, he secured an impressive 35 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, making him the most decorated Spanish footballer in history.

On the international stage, Iniesta was pivotal during Spain’s golden era, contributing significantly to their victories in UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His iconic winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands is forever etched in football lore.

After departing from Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued to display his skills with Vissel Kobe in Japan before a brief spell with Emirates in the UAE Pro League. Throughout his illustrious career, Iniesta’s game intelligence and close control established him as one of the most skilled midfielders in football history.
