October1Protest: Heavy Security Presence in Rivers Amid Tensions

-

A significant security presence was evident in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, on Tuesday as tensions rose ahead of the nationwide #October1Fearless protest.

This protest follows the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations, where youths across various states participated for ten days in August.

During monitoring efforts, large groups of individuals believed to be anti-protesters were seen gathering at the Federal Secretariat and Pleasure Park, locations previously occupied by August demonstrators.

In related news, reports indicate that a Kwara court has restricted public protests to the Metropolitan Square, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged security agents to respect the rights of October 1 protesters. Additionally, the Akwa Ibom police have stated they are fully prepared for any developments.

While the suspected anti-protesters remained stationary and did not engage in demonstrations, the presence of security personnel increased in response. Officers from the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, Civil Defence, and other agencies patrolled the state capital.

Despite the heavy security, local businesses operated normally, and traffic flowed without incident, with no reports of violence or law enforcement issues at the time of this report.
