The Nigerian Senate has passed an amendment bill prohibiting the export of unprocessed maize, introducing penalties that include a minimum one-year jail term or a fine equivalent to the monetary value of the exported goods.
The bill, originally passed by the House of Representatives, aims to tackle Nigeria’s ongoing food crisis by banning the exportation of unprocessed maize in commercial quantities exceeding one metric ton. The revised clauses, approved through a voice vote on Wednesday, mandate strict penalties for violators, including customs officers or others who facilitate such exports.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who presented the lead debate, explained that the bill is intended to secure food resources and promote local maize processing. He urged lawmakers to back the measure, emphasizing its potential to enhance domestic food security.
However, Senator Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) proposed removing maize derivatives from the bill, arguing that farmers would benefit more from processing value-added products. The amendment, supported by Senator Aminu Abbas (Adamawa Central), was adopted.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin endorsed the amendment, noting that it aligns with job creation initiatives by supporting the maize value chain.
With the Senate’s approval, the bill now requires harmonization with the House version before transmission to the President for assent.
