Protesters have voiced their dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent address to the nation, asserting that he did not adequately address their demands.
The protesters insist that the President must first tackle their grievances and the ongoing economic hardship before any negotiations can occur.
The protests, which commenced on Thursday, have significantly disrupted socio-economic activities across various states, leading to deserted motor parks, shops, malls, markets, and roads.
One of the protest leaders, Deji Adeyanju, told reporters that they are open to engaging with the government in the coming days.
“This is crucial for the protest’s success. We must learn from EndSARS. President Tinubu should listen to the people and address their demands. The voice of the people is paramount,” Adeyanju stated.
He called for a national dialogue with protesters and urged the President and all politicians to make sacrifices, including halting their pay.
“It’s about saving Nigeria from total collapse,” Adeyanju added, refuting the President’s claim that the protest was politically motivated.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations (CSOs) have advocated for dialogue with the President. Groups such as Transparency International (TI), Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have praised President Tinubu for urging protesters to suspend their actions and embrace dialogue.
Awwal Musa Rafsanjani, speaking on behalf of the CSOs, acknowledged the President’s recognition of the grievances driving the protests and his commitment to addressing the concerns of Nigerian citizens.
“President Tinubu highlighted the importance of unity and collective effort in reshaping the nation’s future, calling on all Nigerians, regardless of age, political affiliation, tribe, or religion, to work together for a better Nigeria. We stand firmly with the demands for justice and reform within the administrative justice system and improved governance, aiming for a just and prosperous nation where peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihoods are enjoyed under a transparent and accountable government,” Rafsanjani said.
