President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received praise for his recent national broadcast urging the cessation of protests, which has been described as a timely and heartfelt appeal for the nation’s stability.
The Campaign for Ethics and Good Governance in Benin City commended the President’s promise to distribute more palliatives nationwide but advised against distributing fertilizers for Edo State through Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Comrade Lucky Efe, the group’s spokesman, criticized the previous distribution of palliatives in the state, alleging they were unevenly distributed and controlled by the ruling party.
“The people of Edo are dissatisfied with how the state governor and his party have managed palliatives such as rice,” Efe stated. “The rice sent to Edo State was appropriated by PDP leaders, who then re-bagged it for political sale. The recent protests have unveiled these acts, with citizens uncovering hidden stores of rice.”
Efe further claimed that the governor had misled the public by stating that the federal rice allocations were being distributed through Christian leaders, while in reality, they were handed over to political leaders for resale.
“We appeal to President Tinubu to use alternative channels for distributing fertilizers because the people have lost confidence in the state government and the PDP,” Efe continued. “We also thank the President for addressing the concerns of Nigerian youth, something the previous administration neglected.”
The group also urged the youth to give the federal government time to implement its economic policies, expressing optimism about the potential positive outcomes.
Additionally, the group condemned the ethnic framing of protests in Nigeria, noting that the 2020 EndSARS protests were unfairly characterized along tribal lines.
