The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false a viral report claiming that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun encouraged Nigerians to assault officers who request to search their phones.
A widely circulated screenshot alleged that the IGP had instructed citizens to “beat up any policeman who asks to check your phone, stone him if he has a gun.” The Nigeria Police, through a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, refuted the claim, describing it as baseless and fabricated.
“The IGP has not issued any such directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers,” the statement clarified. Instead, the police emphasized that citizens should report misconduct through appropriate channels to uphold accountability and the rule of law.
The Force PRO reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police to maintaining professionalism and urged the public to disregard fake reports designed to incite violence or undermine law enforcement efforts.
This development underscores the importance of verifying information before dissemination to prevent misinformation and public unrest.
