The Ogun State Government has pledged to dismantle societal stereotypes and foster equity by creating job opportunities, improving education, and enhancing healthcare access for Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).
Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment during the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The event highlighted this year’s theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
Adeleye emphasized that empowering PLWDs to take on leadership roles is central to shaping inclusive policies and fostering societal progress.
“As we amplify the voices of Persons with Disabilities, we recognize their potential as transformative leaders and agents of change,” Adeleye stated.
The government has supported PLWDs with facilities such as mobility aids, professional tools, and digital educational devices. Adeleye added that Ogun State remains committed to working with stakeholders in the public and private sectors to ensure true inclusion, emphasizing policies that prioritize accessible education, equitable employment, and tailored healthcare.
This initiative aligns with global statistics highlighting the prevalence of disabilities. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the global population, experience significant disabilities, while Nigeria accounts for 35.1 million PLWDs, according to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its stance on leaving no one behind in its pursuit of an inclusive society.
