Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for his efforts in transforming the state and focusing on human capital development. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly rebuilt 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City on Wednesday, Obasanjo described Obaseki as a reformer who has improved the lives of the people through multi-sectoral reforms.
Obasanjo expressed gratitude for the hospital, named in honor of his late wife, Stella, and commended Obaseki’s commitment to enhancing healthcare and honoring past leaders. He noted that the renovated hospital is a testament to Obaseki’s dedication to building a strong healthcare infrastructure and urged other leaders to prioritize human capital.
“This hospital demonstrates the impact of visionary leadership and dedication to the public’s well-being,” Obasanjo said. “Governor Obaseki’s commitment to delivering accessible healthcare is commendable, setting a high standard for efficient service delivery in Nigeria.”
Obaseki, reflecting on his administration’s achievements, highlighted the significant improvements in healthcare, including the establishment of a primary healthcare system and a health insurance program covering over 300,000 citizens. He shared that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for robust healthcare, leading to expanded facilities and training programs for health workers across the state.
Additionally, Obaseki voiced concerns over recent setbacks, including the detention of Edo’s Accountant-General by the EFCC, which has slowed state projects. He urged political leaders to prioritize the welfare of their people over personal interests, emphasizing the value of sustainable healthcare systems.
The expanded Stella Obasanjo Hospital, part of the state’s vision for medical tourism, is designed to bridge primary and specialized care, ultimately transforming Edo State into a healthcare hub in Nigeria.
