The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a December 1, 2024 ultimatum for all state governments to adopt the N70,000 minimum wage approved by President Bola Tinubu in July. The NLC warns that states yet to comply by this deadline will face indefinite strikes. While over 20 states have already implemented the new wage, others remain behind.
In a communique released after a National Executive Council meeting, the NLC condemned the hardship endured by Nigerians, partly attributing it to inflated fuel prices. It accused fuel marketers of artificially raising petrol costs, worsening the financial burden on citizens. Additionally, the NLC emphasized the need for fair petrol pricing and called for the revival of Nigeria’s public refineries.
The NLC has also established a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee to mobilize support for the strike action and educate workers on their rights.
