The Lagos Merchandise and Traders Association, representing 169 traders at Lagos Island’s Oluwole Market, has filed a suit seeking N3.4 billion in compensation from the Lagos State Government over an alleged unlawful demolition of their kee-klamp structures. Filed at the Lagos State High Court, the traders’ claims include declarations to affirm their legal occupation of the market and damages for lost goods and disrupted business.
According to the association, officials demolished the shops on April 21, 2024, despite prior assurances that no demolition would take place. The traders are pursuing additional damages of N412 million for the second claimant and N317 million for the third claimant, among other costs.
Justice Olukayode Ogunjobi adjourned the case to December 6, 2024, and instructed that hearing notices be issued to the defendants.
