The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has announced initiatives to enhance border security and migration management across the nation through new technological advancements.
During the 2024 Annual General Conference of the NIS held in Jos on Friday, Controller General Kemi Nandap revealed that the agency has promoted 13,977 officers since the start of the year, marking a renewed effort to bolster its operations. “We recognize the complexities of securing our 4,047 km borders with neighboring countries, and our collective resilience has led to significant progress despite the challenges we’ve faced,” Nandap stated.
She highlighted ongoing reforms in various areas, including Border Governance, Passport Administration, Visa Regime, and the deployment of ICT. “We strive to maintain a balance between facilitating free movement and ensuring security,” she emphasized.
The NIS is committed to leveraging technology and fostering international cooperation to address security challenges. Nandap expressed optimism that the conference would allow for strategic discussions aimed at further elevating the agency’s capabilities.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, underscored the importance of secure borders for national safety, advocating for proactive security measures rather than reactive responses. He called for enhanced collaboration between the NIS, Customs Service, and the Border Community Development Agency.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Secretary to the Government Samuel Jatau, expressed concerns about border-related issues and affirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the NIS to tackle these challenges.
The conference, themed “Enhancing Border Security and Migration Management in a Globalized World: Challenges and Opportunities for Nigeria,” aims to explore emerging issues in border governance and develop sustainable strategies for the NIS to enhance national security and economic interests.
