The Nigerian government has reiterated that private planes, including Bishop David Oyedepo’s jet, cannot operate from private airstrips without prior clearance from relevant authorities. This clarification was made by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, during an interview with Channels TV on Sunday.
Keyamo addressed security concerns raised by the House of Representatives two months ago, which had prompted calls for revoking airstrip licenses issued to private individuals and organizations, including Oyedepo. These concerns were linked to allegations of illegal arms importation by terrorism sponsors.
Dispelling fears of unauthorized flights, Keyamo explained, “Planes or drones cannot fly in or out of Nigeria without proper clearance. Private jets must first land at an international airport for processing by Customs, Immigration, and the NDLEA before heading to or from private airstrips.”
He emphasized the stringent protocols in place to ensure all flights comply with Nigerian aviation regulations. “Nobody uses an airstrip for any purpose without seeking and securing clearance from the appropriate authorities,” Keyamo stated.
The government’s stance highlights its commitment to maintaining robust security measures and accountability in private aviation operations.
