Former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, has called for the decentralization of power in Nigeria to enhance growth and development. Speaking on *Inside Sources* with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Gambari argued that excessive centralization hinders effective governance.
“We have to decentralize power. The central government holds too much authority,” Gambari stated, attributing the concentration of power to Nigeria’s prolonged military rule.
He emphasized the need for states to take charge of sectors like education and agriculture, suggesting a review of the exclusive and concurrent legislative lists to reduce unnecessary federal control.
Local government autonomy, Gambari added, must go beyond financial independence. “Strengthening local government capacities and ensuring credible leadership is crucial. Without this, resources directed at local governments risk being wasted,” he cautioned.
Highlighting Nigeria’s global significance, Gambari stressed that the country’s unity and progress are critical for Africa’s future. He also cited United Nations projections placing Nigeria as the most populous nation by 2050, underscoring the importance of strategic governance reforms.
“The Almighty has a purpose for this country. We must work to ensure Nigeria’s survival and relevance on the global stage,” he concluded.
