Nigeria is in mourning after the passing of Lt-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night at age 56 following a prolonged illness. President Bola Tinubu announced the tragic news, ordering national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days in his honor.
Tinubu expressed heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, praising Lagbaja’s significant contributions to the nation’s security.
Lt-Gen Lagbaja was appointed by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, and was known for his leadership in combatting insurgency and promoting internal security. Following the news, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday was postponed, and Vice President Kashim Shettima led a moment of silence in the late army chief’s honor.
Government officials, including the Ministers of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff, also expressed their grief, highlighting Lagbaja’s courage and dedication. Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede, described the loss as significant and urged Nigerians to celebrate Lagbaja’s life of service.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also mourned the loss, calling it a huge blow to the nation, particularly as Nigeria faces ongoing security challenges. Governors across the country, including those from Osun, Kwara, and Ekiti states, joined in mourning, with many praising Lagbaja’s role in securing the nation’s borders and addressing internal threats.
The country’s condolences continue as the nation reflects on Lagbaja’s legacy of courage, professionalism, and commitment to the defense of Nigeria.
