Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced a new self-driving robotaxi on Thursday, forecasting that it will hit the market by 2027. The fully electric vehicle, designed without a steering wheel or pedals, is expected to cost under $30,000 and offer wireless charging via inductive technology. Musk claims the car will be “10 to 20 times safer” than human-driven vehicles.
Speaking at an event in Los Angeles, Musk described the vehicle as a “lounge on wheels,” allowing passengers to relax as the car autonomously takes them to their destination. He also announced plans for a fully autonomous driving program in Texas and California by next year, followed by the production of what he dubbed the “cybercab.”
In addition to the robotaxi, Musk introduced a passenger vehicle called “The Robovan,” which can seat 20 people or transport goods. He also showcased Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, predicting it will be one of the company’s biggest products, priced between $20,000 and $30,000.
Despite Musk’s optimistic projections, skepticism remains due to previous delays in delivering self-driving cars. Many experts caution that regulatory challenges and technical limitations still stand in the way of fully autonomous vehicles becoming a reality. Reactions online have been mixed, with some praising the innovations while others doubt Tesla’s ability to meet its promises.
