Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal leadership crises and multiple court battles as reasons.
In a statement released on Thursday, Iyawe emphasized that the leadership instability in the LP left him and his supporters uncertain about the party’s future.
“My decision to resign from LP is due to the party’s inability to resolve its leadership crisis and the endless court cases against its leadership, creating confusion about its stability,” Iyawe said.
Iyawe’s defection aligns with his political interests and follows the move of three other LP lawmakers who recently joined the APC.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in leadership disputes, with conflicting claims over its legitimate Caretaker Committee from the national to the state levels. These challenges have reportedly hindered the party’s functionality and left members disillusioned.
Iyawe’s move marks a significant shift in Edo State’s political landscape, further bolstering the APC’s representation in the National Assembly. The Labour Party is yet to issue a formal response to the defections.
