The legal team representing Afe Babalola, SAN, founder of Afe Babalola University, has asserted that human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi must substantiate his allegations against the elder statesman to avoid legal consequences.
At a press conference in Ado Ekiti, the lawyers—Owoseni Ajayi, Olakanmi Falade, and Lawrence Fasanmi—highlighted that Farotimi’s claims in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, are defamatory and aimed at tarnishing Babalola’s reputation.
Farotimi was arrested and arraigned in Ekiti State following a petition by Babalola, with the court ordering his remand until December 10. The lawyers defended the legal process, emphasizing its adherence to due process.
Ajayi stated, “Aare Afe Babalola petitioned the police to investigate and invite Mr. Farotimi to prove his allegations. If the claims are proven true, he will be freed; otherwise, the law will take its course.”
The legal team described the accusations as baseless and damaging to Babalola’s legacy. They also commended the police for their swift handling of the case, dismissing claims that Farotimi’s bail was unfairly denied.
In response to calls for protests by Farotimi’s supporters, the Ekiti State Police Command banned unlawful gatherings, citing security concerns. The command warned against activities that could disrupt public peace and imposed a ban on fireworks during the Ember months.
The case has sparked nationwide attention, with observers divided on the implications for free speech and defamation laws in Nigeria.
