The Labour Party (LP) leadership crisis intensified over the weekend as the party failed to secure any local government areas (LGAs) in the Abia State local government elections. The results are seen as a significant setback, highlighting the ongoing national crisis within the party.
LP’s leadership turmoil has seen high-profile figures like former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia Governor Alex Otti break away from Julius Abure’s leadership amid corruption and mismanagement allegations. Obi and Otti, along with others, nominated former finance minister Nenadi Usman to lead a caretaker committee, but Abure has clung to power, following a Federal High Court ruling that reaffirmed his position as national chairman.
The Abia LG election results, which followed a landmark Supreme Court ruling, saw the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) winning 15 out of 17 LGAs, while the Young Progressive Party (YPP) claimed the remaining two. Reports suggest that Governor Otti encouraged his supporters to run under other platforms, notably ZLP, contributing to LP’s dismal performance.
Abure’s loyalists, including Abia State Chairman Prince G.O. Ndubueze, denounced the results as fraudulent, claiming that the election was rigged to favor ZLP and YPP. In contrast, YPP Chairman Nelcin Uluocha attributed his party’s success to hard work and effective campaigning, rejecting claims of manipulation.
Factional LP Chairman Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti defended the election results as free and fair, encouraging unity within the party despite internal disagreements.
Political communication expert Ata-Awaji Anthony expressed concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, particularly the dominance of ruling parties in local elections. He warned that the current political climate undermines democratic principles and breeds authoritarianism, putting democracy in peril.
As the LP continues to battle internal strife and external challenges, its future in Nigeria’s political landscape remains uncertain.
