The retiring Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has expressed his only regret as he concludes 35 years of service: his inability to arrest the killers of Taiwo Oyekanmi, the late Finance Director attached to Ogun Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Oyekanmi was ambushed and fatally shot on November 29, 2023, while returning from the bank after withdrawing state funds.
Reports suggest that about five gunmen intercepted the bullion van Oyekanmi was in as it ascended the popular Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta. They allegedly opened fire, broke into the van with sledgehammers, and made away with large sums of money. Oyekanmi was later pronounced dead upon arrival at State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Following the tragic incident, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun placed a ₦50 million bounty for anyone with information leading to the arrest of the assailants. Despite this, no arrest has been made one year later.
In his final interview before his retirement, Alamutu expressed his frustration and regret over his administration’s failure to make any breakthrough in solving the crime.
“The only regret I have in this state is that up till now we have not been able to arrest the person who shot the finance director. It still boils down to the fact that no information, no clues,” Alamutu stated.
He explained that efforts had even led them to Ibadan, but the lack of actionable intelligence hampered their progress.
While acknowledging the challenges, Alamutu expressed confidence that his successor would build on the efforts of his administration to ensure justice prevails.
“God knows that my successor will continue from where we stopped because it is important we get the culprit, and God will assist my successor.”
He also expressed gratitude for the support from community leaders, citizens, and the media throughout his tenure, acknowledging their role in the fight against crime in the state.
As Alamutu steps away from his role after 35 years of service, the question remains: Will justice finally be served in the murder of Taiwo Oyekanmi?
