In honor of Abia State’s first executive governor, the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Governor Alex Otti has renamed Abia State Polytechnic in Aba as Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic. Governor Otti announced the renaming during an interdenominational service held in Umuahia on Thursday to celebrate the life and legacy of the late statesman.
Otti praised Dr. Onu’s dedication to education and his vision for a progressive Abia. He highlighted that Onu established the polytechnic in 1992, emphasizing the importance of education as a vehicle for economic development. Otti also recalled Onu’s abolition of the indigene/non-indigene policy in Abia’s civil service, which fostered inclusivity by allowing all skilled individuals to serve the state regardless of origin.
Dr. Onu’s legacy, Otti stated, extends beyond Abia State. As the first chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Elected Governors, Onu championed democratic values, good governance, and national unity, with an eye toward Nigeria’s development.
