The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy has called on the Federal Government to investigate alleged corruption within the oil sector following the recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. The coalition made this demand during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, responding to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s decision to raise petrol prices.
The price hike has sparked widespread outrage, with citizens expressing concern over its impact amid an already deteriorating economic situation. Yakubu Dauda, the coalition’s convener, criticized the leadership of the NNPCL, particularly under Mele Kyari, for failing to fulfill promises to enhance the country’s petroleum sector. He highlighted the failure to revive local refineries as a significant shortcoming of the current leadership.
Dauda stated, “The Nigerian government must conduct a comprehensive audit of the NNPCL’s operations, focusing on corruption allegations and the unnecessary charges added to PMS prices. Those responsible for inflating fuel costs and sabotaging local refineries must be held accountable, irrespective of their positions.”
He further emphasized the need for the government to invest in Nigeria’s local refineries to reduce reliance on imported fuel. “Nigeria has the resources, manpower, and expertise to become a net exporter of petroleum products. However, achieving this requires breaking free from the corrupt cabals that have hijacked the industry,” he added.
