FG Warns DisCos Over Arbitrary Billing and Metering Practices

-

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a strong warning to electricity distribution companies (DisCos), stressing the importance of prioritizing consumers’ rights in the metering process. This came during a crucial meeting in Abuja, where FCCPC CEO, Mr. Tunji Bello, condemned the arbitrary billing practices and lack of transparency in metering.

Bello called out DisCos for their failure to adhere to regulations set by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and addressed consumer complaints regarding the upcoming phase-out of the Unistar prepaid meters, which could lead to increased costs for customers. He emphasized that DisCos must bear the costs of replacing obsolete meters and should not impose additional charges on consumers.

The FCCPC also condemned the practice of estimated billing for faulty meters, affirming that any transition must be free of consumer burdens. Bello warned that any violations of the rules would result in immediate corrective action.
