FCT EXCO Approves Contract Renewal to Secure Abuja Rail

-

The Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee (FCT EXCO) has approved the renewal of contracts for two firms to secure Abuja rail tracks and stations for an additional two years.

The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Transportation Secretariat, Dr. Chinedum Elechi, announced the development during a briefing after the EXCO meeting in Abuja on Monday.

Dr. Elechi explained that the decision follows the successful reduction in vandalism since the contracts were first awarded in March 2022. The renewed contracts aim to safeguard the rail mass transit scheme’s tracks and 12 stations, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

“Because of those contracts and the surveillance provided, vandalisation on the line dropped dramatically. The Honorable Minister of FCT intends for the Abuja Rail Mass Transit to run fully and thoroughly throughout his tenure and beyond,” Elechi stated.

He highlighted that vandalism of critical infrastructure, such as cables, could disrupt operations for extended periods, making the renewal imperative.

In addition, the FCT EXCO approved the development of two multi-event sports centers in strategic city locations. Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Richard Yunana Dauda, revealed that the centers will feature facilities for football, tennis, table tennis, and indoor sports, aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“These centers will be open to all residents, ensuring they are well-utilized for the benefit of the people,” Dauda added.
