The Labour Party (LP) has called on the federal government to address the rising hunger and deteriorating welfare of Nigerians. This comes in the wake of recent stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which resulted in the deaths of over 50 people during the distribution of end-of-the-year palliatives.
In a statement on Monday, LP National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim lamented the growing desperation among Nigerians, attributing it to the rising cost of living and economic mismanagement.
“The bottom line is that there is hunger in the land,” Ibrahim said. He cited past tragedies, including incidents where Nigerians risked their lives to scoop fuel from accident scenes, resulting in deadly infernos.
According to Ibrahim, hunger has become a driving force behind increasing crime rates, with millions of Nigerians suffering due to inflation and poor economic policies.
Ibrahim criticized the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as contributors to the hardship faced by citizens.
“Hunger is turning into an epidemic, and not many people can survive this situation,” he added, urging the government to prioritize using the country’s resources to improve the welfare of its citizens.
The LP secretary also expressed concern over the lack of tangible measures taken by the government to alleviate hunger and reduce poverty. He emphasized the need for immediate and effective actions to address the crisis.
