The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has requested that the Lagos State Special Offences Court dismiss an application by Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which challenges the court’s jurisdiction to hear his case.

- EFCC’s Argument: EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, contended that Emefiele’s application was a deliberate attempt to delay the prosecution. Oyedepo emphasized that the court has full jurisdiction to handle the charges, as they pertain to economic and financial crimes, which the EFCC is mandated to prosecute.
- Emefiele’s Lawyer’s Argument: Emefiele’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, argued that the state high court lacked jurisdiction to try Emefiele for alleged abuse of office, as it raised significant constitutional and legal issues. Ojo also questioned the constitutionality of some of the charges, claiming they were not based on existing Nigerian laws.
